In a feature for El País, Bruno Martin explains the upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider to its High Luminosity mode, which seeks to increase the proton-proton collisions by a factor of 5 to 7. This will be achieved by focusing the beams with new superconducting quadrupole magnets and 'crab' cavities that tilt the incoming particle bunches before each collision.
