The Fermilab Academic Lectures provide pedagogical introductions to topics of high current interest in particle physics and allied fields for graduate students, postdocs, and other inquiring minds. The 2013–2014 edition will focus on the scientific goals of ultrasensitive experiments and illuminate how the interplay among diverse experiments can lead us toward a more complete understanding the physical world.

Evidence for High-Energy Extraterrestrial Neutrinos at the IceCube Detector

Introduction:
The kilometer-scale detector IceCube at the South Pole - the world’s largest neutrino telescope - has produced the first evidence of high-energy neutrinos of cosmic origin. In particular, they observed 28 high energy neutrinos events with in-detector deposited energies between 30 and 1200 TeV. arXiv:1311.5238

Introduction:

This outreach-conference to the general public took place last Friday 15 Nov 2013.
'Particles, LHC and the Higgs Boson' was within a conference series at 'CSIC Residence' in Madrid that has been organized by our institute IFT/UAM-CSIC as one of the activities belonging to the 'Semana de la Ciencia' (Week of Science).

Neutrinos: Von der Welt der Elementarteilchen zum Kosmos

November 18, 2013 by admin

Interviewee image:
Introduction:

The LUX experiment (for Large Underground Xenon) just released its first results in the race to identify the particle nature of dark matter. Dark matter particles - more specifically WIMPs (Weakly Interacting Massive Particles) - are so weakly interacting that they normally pass through regular matter unimpeded. The aim of LUX - the latest among many direct detection experiments, is to intercept a few of these elusive particles and measure the tiny quanta of light that they create as they collide with the atoms inside a detector.

Introduction:
A famous and interesting property of neutrinos is how little they interact and hence their difficulty to be detected. As such our knowledge in this sector of particle physics is limited. There are three neutrino flavors...
