08/01/2014Only 5% of the universe is made of ordinary matter such as atoms which make stars, planets, and us. The rest of the universe is dark and unknown, composed of dark matter and dark energy. Invisible dark matter makes up 27% of the universe, and we don't know its nature yet. Currently many experiments around the world are searching for dark matter and we hope that in the near future we will solve the mystery of dark matter and understand its properties.

18/11/2013Neutrinos sind geisterhafte Teilchen, die unentwegt in großer Zahl um uns sind. Ihre Wechselwirkung mit normaler Materie ist so gering, dass sie uns und die ganze Erde durchdringen, ähnlich wie Licht durch Glas. In diesem Vortrag wird diese besondere Teilchensorte vorgestellt, verschiedene Neutrino-Quellen diskutiert, und deren Bedeutung für die Physik der Elementarteilchen sowie in der Kosmologie und Astrophysik hervorgehoben. Tatsächlich könnten Neutrinos bei der Erzeugung der Materie wenige Augenblicke nach dem Urknall - und somit auch für unsere Existenz - eine entscheidende Rolle gespielt haben.

Measuring the primordial abundances of these elements provides a window on the early evolution of the Universe and a probe of particle physics (neutrino physics and more) beyond the standard model.
31/07/2013Paper of the month: Results on neutrinoless double beta decay of Ge-76 from GERDA Phase INeutrinos are the most elusive of all Standard Model particles due to the fact that they interact extremely weakly with all other forms of matter. Yet, they are the most abundant particles in our Universe (besides photons), which makes it of great importance to measure and understand their properties in detail. One of their most astonishing features was proposed by Ettore Majorana in the 1930s, suggesting that, unlike all other elementary constituents of the Cosmos, neutrinos could be their own antiparticles.
